a bit of contrivance.
~する use one's head [brains] a little; use a little ingenuity; do a bit of contriving; fiddle (around).

●この発明品の商品化には一工夫が必要だ. We'll need a little ingenuity [to do a bit of fiddling] to turn this invention into a saleable product.

●うーん, もう一工夫ほしいところだよ. Come on; use your heads a bit more [let's have a bit more ingenuity].

・これはまだ一工夫足りないな. We haven't used our brains enough. | Not enough ingenuity has gone into this.

・もっと一工夫も二(ふた)工夫もしないと個性的な作品にはならないよ. You'll have to think a good deal harder [fiddle around quite a lot] if you want to produce something individual.
